[Multiple games] KAT2WAV (THPS1 sounds)

Post by Demo » Sun Dec 20, 2015 2:17 pm

KAT2WAV is a small utility to convert Treyarch sound containers (KAT/XSB) found in some Tony Hawk's Pro Skater console ports, including:
- THPS1 Dreamcast
- MHPB Dreamcast
- THPS2x Xbox

The actual goal was THPS1 sounds, the rest is a useless bonus.

Download: https://github.com/DCxDemo/KAT2WAV/releases/
Github repo: https://github.com/DCxDemo/KAT2WAV
Sound sample: http://vocaroo.com/i/s1pMqFVHDLX6 (Roswell alien)

Note that it won't work with THPS2 Dreamcast. It uses KAT files as well, but it's 4bit ADPCM compressed as opposed to 8 bit plain PCM. And you can get sounds from PC version anyway, so I didn't bother.

For the matter of fact, there is a tool to unpack low quality PS1 VAB files as well.
To unpack VABs, you have to use PSXSND utility by SMON.
Type this in command line (frequency here is 12050, maybe slightly different):

Code: Select all

 psxsnd.exe <your.vab> <frequency>
If you can't find your wavs, they are probably in C:\Users\<your_name>\

Thanks for this.

Any chance you could share how one would get the KAT files from a dreamcast CDI file in the first place?

just mount the virtual drive using daemon tools and copy the files needed.

daemon tools has adware, bleh
I've been using WinCDEmu for a while but for some reason it doesn't have support for cdi files.

Alright, I extracted all of the files from the cdi, attempted to convert the KAT files, but it results in an empty folder being produced.

it's due to I only check for lowercase extension. rename to *.kat instead of KAT and it will work. already fixed the source to accept uppercase, will update the exe the other day.

Every file I try it can't open and then it says it's done? I've even renamed it lowercase! What the f**k?

did you properly read the instruction on github?
1. Important: copy your KAT/XSB file off the CD to any place on your hard drive.
that's really important.
